Rick Santorum is an asshole

Rick Santorum, former presidential candidate and royal dickweed, had this to say during “State of the Nation,” a CNN program, about the kids protesting guns this past Saturday. Do not read this while drinking coffee since you will likely do a spit take:

“How about those kids, instead of looking to someone else to solve their problems, do something about maybe taking CPR classes or trying to deal with situations where there is a violent shooter and you can actually respond to that. They took action to ask someone to pass a law. They didn’t take action to say, ‘How do I as an individual deal with this problem? How am I gonna do something about stopping bullying in my community. What am I gonna do to actually help respond to a shooter.”

So basically, Rick Santorum, who used to be a senator, is flat out stating that expecting congress to make laws that ban certain weapons, increases the age where one can buy a gun, or demands far more stringent background checks before handing someone a weapon of death, is a waste of time. That the NRA has their nuts in such a collective stranglehold. that demanding something be done will accomplish nothing. Do not expect your representatives to represent you. Do not ask the lawmakers to make laws.

Instead the only thing you can do is accept that violence will be done to you at the will of shooters, and the ONLY thing you can do is learn CPR. Realize that the people in charge of passing laws for your protection are leaving you on your own.

What in God’s name does any of this have to do with bullying? The shooters aren’t bullies; they’re homicidal lunatics. Bullies harass you for your lunch money. If they’re shooting guns at you, then it’s an attempted murderer.

I mean, part of me thinks the kids may really be wasting their time because the NRA will never let anything be done to pull back America’s obsession with guns. But I support their “We’re not gonna take it” attitude. Plus let us not forget that many of them are going to be voting in 2020, and they are not going to forget how Trump and Santorum’s former colleagues left them hung out to dry while accepting donations and instructions from the NRA.

  1. Don’t know what bullying has to do with Anything either. You know who gets bullied the most ? LBGTQ community, minorities, people with disabilities and people from non Christian religions. Looking at the faces of the shooters, they resemble the bullies and not the bullied.

  2. First, let me state my opinion that Santorum is not an áššhølë but is instead (related) santorum as per the Urban dictionary.
    .
“What in God’s name does any of this have to do with bullying?” The answer to that is simply that Santorum is throwing out everything he can in the hopes that one of his “arguments” will distract from the real issue.
    .
I had a long rant about his views attacking the very idea of government but I couldn’t turn it into anything readable. However…his views attack the very idea of government.

  3. I know CPR. Learning it and getting updated training is a part of my job.
    .
CPR will do Jack & Shìŧ for a subject suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Rick Santorum is a fûçkìņg clueless áššhølë.

    1. Honestly, I think you are, unwittingly, insulting ‘fûçkìņg clueless áššhølëš’.

Santorum cannot hope to achieve that degree of loathsome inhumanity. It’s too far beyond him.

  4. Do not read this while drinking coffee since you will likely do a spit take

No, do not read it while in possession of a working brain because it will make your head explode at the unbelievable level of stupidity and condescension.
    .
It just… Santorum is… He *really* actually thinks that… I mean the idea that… *sputter*… I just can’t … AAARRRGGGGHHH! [headdesk thump thump]
    .
    See?

  5. I believe this part of your essay is completely correct:

“So basically, Rick Santorum, who used to be a senator, is flat out stating that expecting congress to make laws that ban certain weapons, increases the age where one can buy a gun, or demands far more stringent background checks before handing someone a weapon of death, is a waste of time. These kids, as much as I respect and admire them, are fooling themselves. As always, nothing will be done and it will happen again. That makes me furious, but it’s reality.

“You’re just wasting your time with your little pamphlets, Mr Paine.”
      .
“That’s a lovely declaration, Mr Jefferson, but you know it won’t change anything.”

  6. I just hope the kids keep the pressure and coverage up, not letting the issue of gun violence (especially but not only in schools) slip by the wayside again. If they can actually change votes in the next elections, all the talk about the NRA’s supposed stranglehold will fall away. I remain… cautiously optimistic. (The NRA is relying on people to remain pessimistic and just accept that nothing will change.)

  7. I know I am an outsider (I live in the UK) but this is madness and it needs to stop. I wholeheartedly agree with what you say Peter. The only thing I will say is I think the bullying thing is people are saying the shooter was bullied. He probably was but nothing gives him the right to shoot anyone most of whom probably did nothing to him. I think Emma Gonzalez mentioned at the rally that took place a few days after the shooting that some people said that they should have done more to befriend the guy etc before he became a problem but like she said ‘you didn’t know this kid.’ Now no one should have bullied him of course but unless it is in direct self defense or defense of another person nothing gives you the right to hurt, kill or terrorise anyone. By which I mean if you are being physically bullied I would fully understand someone hitting back not taking out a rifle and killing them unless they were pointing a gun at you. Lots of people get bullied at some point in their lives. I and many people I know have suffered bullying to some degree but you learn how to deal with it. Schools and the wider community should (and sometimes do) offer help and support to people who are bullied and it should be made clear to everyone from a young age that it will not be tolerated. I understand your skepticism that things will change but I love the way the young people are taking charge and leading the way. Lots of great things have happened because people have refused to take no for an answer.

  8. If we’re just supposed to accept that violence will be done, then I have no qualms about it being done to the likes of Mr. Frothy and Steve “I wish I were born in the Confederacy instead of Iowa” King. Then we can see if CPR is enough to save them.

  9. I remember saying years ago when Santorum was voted out how good the phrase “EX-Senator Rick Santorum” felt to say. This idiocy reminds me anew of that fact. I think Jerry’s post seems to sum up Mr. Ex-Senator pretty well.

  10. I don’t usually come here on days other than on Friday, when you post your weekly Freakout Friday column, Peter, but some reason, I felt curious to do so today, and as it so happens, you not only indeed posted a rare non-Friday essay, but you expressed pretty much the same sentiments about Santorum that I did on my Facebook yesterday.
    .
I will never cease to be amazed at how the hatred, corruption, and hypocrisy of the Right has caused them, in almost cult-like fashion, to leave all trace of human human decency behind.

  11. “What in God’s name does any of this have to do with bullying?”
    .
I think that maybe it is at least possible that what Santorum was *trying* to imply (did I use enough waffling qualifiers there?) was that the school shooters were victims of bullying that were lashing out.
    .
I make no claims as to the accuracy of such an assertion – either the assertion itself or that it is what Santorum was attempting to say.

  12. Exactly what these kids have mobilized into action – isn’t that basically what paid lobbyists do? Paid lobbyists wrangle politicians into hearing their causes and trying to get laws passed. Am I missing something? Yes, Santorum is an áššhølë.
