Ariel needs your help

She’s been offered a teaching job in Durham, North Carolina. She needs somewhere to live out there: a three bedroom house with a high-end rent of $1100. She can’t handle more because teaching salaries in NC suck.

Please let me know if you can help her.

  1. Wish I could give some valid advice but it’s been almost 20 years since I moved from Durham to Sanford. I would guess that North Durham offers the most likely odds of finding a decent place at that price. Other local cities like Chapel Hill, Cary and Apex are likely to be higher and something like Sanford is probably too far a commute, though you’d get more house for your dollars. Durham is better than it was when I lived there but definitely one of those cities that has good and bad areas

Congratulations to Ariel! The pay is pretty meh (though improving and the cost of living is reasonable here) but I’ve found the attitudes of parents toward teachers here to be far less antagonistic than what I’ve seen in other places. I wish her the best and I know her students will be getting that from her.

  2. The fastest growing areas around here & lots of new housing are actually on the Raleigh side (Holly Springs Morrisville and Rolesville), making Wake County/Raleigh the 41st fastest growing area in the country. There are a few places still left in her range just above Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, but they’re going fast. Morrisville borders Durham on the airport side.

  3. Durham is about 4 hours away from where I live, so I can’t offer much other than to say Elmo’s Diner is an incredible establishment in Durham. Best malts I’ve ever had, and great food. So good I had to follow them on Facebook, where they’ve pleasantly demonstrated they are operated by good, progressive people. Definitely recommend frequenting the place!
