I know, all right? Stop telling me!

I’m getting bombarded with e-mails from people telling me Bruce Jones is now exclusive with DC (in addition to the postings here.) So please, for heaven’s sake, stop letting me know.

No, no one from Marvel has contacted me, no, they haven’t asked me to write “Hulk,” no, I doubt very much they will. Would I take it if offered? Well, after passing up Kerry’s offer and forcing him to go with his second choice, I have a hole in my schedule, but I really don’t know because there’s no reason for me to give it any thought.

  1. cool. I’m first to post, and I have nothing to say. HEY! PAD, have you been in contact with anyone over at Mutant Enemy about writing the Serenity Movie Novel?? Please for the LOVE of GOD, get this job!!! You would be great at it.

how about an update on the lastest ST:NF novel(s)?

    -James

  2. I doubt very much they will.

    Me too, unfortunately.

But I think the upside is that in the interim, they are no doubt going to be bombarded by requests for your return, which may lead to you getting other assignments.

  3. y’know, after reading this on newsarama yesterday, my first thought was, “holy crap! gotta let PAD know”.

then it dawned on me. I’m a 36 year old web developer living out in Phoenix, AZ who hasn’t been seriously into the collecting comics hobby for close to 9 years now.

at that point, it occurred to me that if I knew…there was a better than average chance that Peter knew (seeing as he’s, y’know, a bit closer to the industry than i am).

Glad to see it posted tho. FWIW, there are a good number of posts on newsarama clamoring for your return. Can’t imagine it’s the only forum where that’s happening either.

Oh well. A person can dream, no?

    Charlie

  4. FYI, Peter…Bruce Jones has signed exclusive with DC.

    KIDDING!!!

    Please don’t kill me.

Honestly, I hope that if it is offered to you that you do consider it. And if you don’t take it, that’s cool too – just keep writing…

  5. Hmmmm…
In other words, more drawn out stories with no point about characters I love in a different universe…
    Greatttttt…

  6. This is kind of a “funny you should mention that” moment for me. This morning, I was thinking; has anybody put Bruce on Prozac or Valium or some other mood-altering drug to keep his emotions in check? I’m not a regular Hulk reader, so I don’t know. I do know that if PAD was to write Hulk again, I’d probably start picking it up regularly rather than just borrowing my friend’s every year or two in order to read the run…

  7. You know, I can see Marvel maybe offering the gig to a few others first, since it was once the hallmark of the Quesada regime to offer bold new directions. But historically, the Hulk is a very difficult book to make work and turn into a hot seller. It wouldn’t surprise me if they ended up offering PAD the gig for the same reason they offered it to him the first time… because nobody else wanted it. Well, nobody with a name, anyway.

And hey, that would be a good thing, as far as I’m concerned. PAD’s Hulk book pretty much singlehandedly kept me buying comics.

  8. Peter David: Well, after passing up Kerry’s offer and forcing him to go with his second choice…
Luigi Novi: Actually, he asked John McCain before Edwards, so Kerry’s his THIRD. 🙂

Uh, Luigi, I’ll bet Peter was attempting sarcasm as so many pundits are clamoring about Edwards being Kerry’s “Second Choice”.

  10. THANK STAN,HE IS LEAVING THE HULK!!!Okay, the first arc”RETURN OF THE MONSTER” was decent ,i even liked the absorbing man arc,but it was becoming just brutal to read that comic.Characters acting out character, deus ex machina out the yin yang and just dreadful please make it stop storylines overwhelmed one of my all time favorite characters. My only fear is who takes over now.
Will Byrne once again promise a bold new direction and leave after six issues??God forbid
they give it to Claremont where it will go from HULK SMASH to hulk bore you with long winded dialogue.(Sorry had to get my Claremont shot in:))
Dont know which i fear more who gets the Hulk or what book does Jones get with DC???See PAD i dint tell you ;)(Please forgive any typos,dámņ DEE and Typekey)

  11. LMAO!

Hey PAD, I’m thrilled just to hear that you’ll be writing a Hulk mini soon. 😀 Having you back on the regular book would be a dream come true, but that doesn’t seem very likely now. This is good enough for me.

  12. Does anyone think it’s a little insulting to Bruce Jones that everyone seems so darn happy that he’s gone? I know people here are just excited at the slightest possibility that PAD may have a remote chance of returning to Hulk, (I’d be excited too, but only when I found out he actually got the gig), but Jones was a pretty good writer and if he were reading everyone’s reactions here and especially at Newsarama I’d guess it would be like a slap in the face. People are saying worse things about Austen, even doing so much as accusing him of getting great writing gigs just because he’s friends with Joe Q. I mean, criticism is fine. Any artist should be prepared for criticism, but no one should have to endure insults, (unless you happen to be the current President of the United States).

All this hub-bub might even be insulting to PAD. If he’s got any news, I’m sure he’ll make an announcement. Hasn’t he always?

  13. That’s all well and good, PAD, but were you aware of James Doohan being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s? It’s all over the Seattle TV news, what with him being a “local actor,” and all…

Besides, why wasn’t *I* told until now that you’re working on a HULK miniseries? Grrr! Todd smash!

I am not a fan of Jones and didn’t appreciate his work on the Hulk. I stayed with is for a hanful of issues and tried jumping back on once or twice. It never seemed like the Hulk to me and the characterizations were more off than any other comic being put out, IMO. Is it insulting that people are glad he is off? I don’t think so. He is going to another job and this thread hasn’t gone off in the “Thank God that guy is gone, he sucked, I hope he is unemployed” direction that many of the online discussions of creators do. I am amazed, though, that people keep bringing up PAD possibly writing Hulk after he’s asked everyone to cool it.

  15. Scott:

Nobody (here at least) is insulting Jones tho. You say that any artist should be able to endure criticism…but then you say that if he were to read this board, he’d be insulted.

I’m happy he’s no longer going to be writing the Hulk. It’s as simple as that. It’s not an insult against the man (I don’t know him). I don’t wish hurtful things upon him. I just didn’t care for his writing on the Hulk.

His vision…just not my cuppa. No harm, no foul…but to say that my happiness over him leaving is a ‘slap in the face’? I don’t think he’s losing any sleep over what I think of him. And as has been pointed out, he’s not been fired and/or going homeless…he’s chosen to move on to what he obviously perceives as bigger and better things.

Seems like a win-win situation for those of us who didn’t care for him as writer of the Hulk.

  16. Hey Peter,

why wouldn’t they ask you do to it? Aren’t you writing a Hulk mini soon? (or did I just answer my own question)

anyway, I’m re-reading FUTURE IMPERFECT right now and I’ll be goddiddly dámņëd if that isn’t an awesome book. such a shame we wouldn’t see stuff like that again.

  17. Speaking as someone who is glad he is off the book ,i dont think I or anyone else here is insulting Jones’ as a writer .We just dont like his work on the Hulk.Would I like to see Peter back writing it the book?Yes ,I would also like to have seen Sal Buscema return as an artist on the book ,and possibly see Erik Larsen take a shot at it.He did an interesting variation on the theme when Dragon took over a friend’s body and the guy would change into the Dragon.Very much like the Grey hulk storyarc actually.
Back to the point ,I think no one wishes him ill will, his version just didnt work for a lot of people and any commments are not meant maliciously at best it is playful sarcasm.
I bash Byrne and Claremont but some people enjoy their work so to each his own…..By the way is it me or does Byrne’s Doom Patrol just seem to be a really bad idea judging by issue 1?(playful sarcasm ,folks thats all)

  18. Sorry PAD

John called me first but I didn’t want to run for public office with all the pictures of me and Britany out there on the net.

    Regards:
    Warren S. Jones III

  19. “Anyway, where would you take the series from here? “
Have to see who is out there writing i like but i did enjoy the concept that Banner has some control over the change.Me personally i would like to see Banner maybe being more of a freelance crusader. He has demonstrated the ability to tap the Hulk’s Strength without a full transformation. He is a genius ,and very resourceful. The guy has potential its just a matter of how he is used.Ultimately there were some good ideas that just went astray. The byrne
run where it appeared Banner had finally lost it only to deteriorate into a lame switched bodies story. The above mentioned increase in control ove r the transformation.Even the Paul jenkins Dark personality in his head waiting to come out.
I have ideas about the Hulk i would like to see
But unfortunately im not a writer or editor….I am interested to see who PAD would like to see get a shot…..Well ,we are all waiting….:)

  20. Peter David: Well, after passing up Kerry’s offer and forcing him to go with his second choice…

Luigi Novi: Really? Ya think? 🙂

  21. have not really been interested in hulk, but PAD returning to it would probably make me pick it up. 🙂

Also, chuck austen has been booted from x-men. I’d love to see PAD write xmen (more-so than hulk) With a little team shuffle, it’d be almost like xfactor v2 (or is it v3 :P)

    fingers crossed!

  22. I was just thinking that PAD would be great on X-Men. You’ve got Claremont and Davis doing the “traditional” or “classic” book, Whedon and Cassaday on the “Hip” one, and Pad could do that thing he does and do a cool blend of the two. That’s one of his strengths, I always thought.

  23. Slightly off-topic, but I feel credit-where-credit-is-due is an important principle: James ROBINSON did “Firearm,” James HUDNALL did “ESPers.”

    Sorry for being a nudge.

You’re probably right. I only know that if I were a writer in the same predicament, it would sting a little bit. I guess real writers are made of tougher stuff.

  25. So nobody misunderstands me, that second passage in my last post should be in bold.

  26. Who Will Write Hulk?

Its been over the comics news sites for a few days now that Bruce Jones has signed an exclusive deal with DC Comics. Which is great for him, but raises a question. Who will take over writing the Hulk? Now I was a big fan of Jone’s work on Hulk so I…

  27. “Also, chuck austen has been booted from x-men”
When did this happen?I kinda liked Austen’s work
on the XMEN,though i think I may be in the minority. How about PAD bringing back XFORCE???The overhyped Rob Liefeld version so we can see how good he really is.I mean if he can make those guys readable he’s a stinkin genius.
If I had my druthers i would like to seePAD
    write the following Marvels:
    Black Panther,Comet Man,Ghost Rider,Captain Universe,Moon Knight,or Cloak and Dagger.
More mainstream :Iron Man ,Fantastic Four,Captain America,Thunderbolts,Nova,or the Silver Surfer.
Do i need to mention this is also with a proper artist and advertising from the company?

  28. Hey all

Hope this isn’t too tacky but given that birds of a feather…well you know the rest. I posted the comment below on comicbookresources.com. Anyway, those who want to make sure the right thing happens, please sign and we’ll pass it along to the powers that be.

To all the Peter David fans out there

Here is a petition that I put together to show the Marvel editorial offices what alot of fans want. Please pass the petition around, get it signed and let’s let Marvel see what the right choice is.
