“Spike: Old Times” written up in Comicsworthreading

Johanna Draper-Carlson was, and is, a bigger supporter of “Fallen Angel.” So when she expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming Spike one-shot, I offered to send her the completed script. She read it and loved it. Her comments can be found in the July 5th installment of her blog, “Cognitive Dissonance.” If I do this right, the link below should take you to it.

  1. PAD, the next time you have communications with them, urge IDW to pursue newsstand distribution for their line. I had another customer for one of their titles today (the Serenity adaptation). We are able to get most of their trade paperbacks, but haven’t seen any of the regular comics yet.

  2. Cal: I’m no comics retailer, but I can guarantee you (as a very big Firefly fan that Dark Horse is actually publishing that adaptation, not IDW. Now if you can just find a copy of Grimjack: Killer Instinct #3, I’d sure appreciate it.

  3. I lost all respect for this woman when her ‘review’ of a comic consisted of *not* reading it, and when called out on it, said that her being unable to bear reading it, should be review enough. Right.

  4. I think that’s actually a pretty valid rating system. You don’t walk out of good movies, y’know.

  5. Knuckles,

Whether IDW is publishing Serenity or not, they are publishing Spike, and some of the other stuff is not too raw for us to carry. We are building an increase in sales of their trades.

And I may be able to do something for you on Grimjack. Let me check.

  6. Knuckles,

My regular retailer has a copy left. Would you like their number? Or if you got me the money I can pick it up and have it sent.

  7. Actually, I have been extremely impressed with the comics that I have gotten from IDW. While I tend to ignore the Niles horror, I have loved the retro 80’s titles that they have released: Grimjack and Jon Sable. The paper quality is great and the other production values are very high. Now, if only they could get the rights to Ms. Tree.

I think that works as a recommendation (or lack thereof) to a friend, but after walking out midway through “School of Rock”, I don’t think I could really give a “review”.

  9. I’m not familiar with the review in question, but since it’s her blog, and to my knowledge, she isn’t being paid to ‘review’ any particular comic…she can freely choose to review or not review any comic, right?

If one’s objection is she chose to use the word, ‘review’, when it really wasn’t one. That’s OK, I suppose. I’m a linguistic purist at times too. But I’m not sure I’d stop reading all her reviews over semantics. Especially if I found her full reviews had value. (Which I, personally, have found in the past)

If one’s objection is she chose not to read and give a complete review of a particular comic, I wonder if that’s really fair. I’m sure there are many comics she doesn’t get around to reading.

  10. Hi John,

There were a number of factors that lead me away. She posted the book and its cover as a ‘review,’ so yes, you might say that I was invoking some of my linguistic purism, but in the ‘review’ itself she slammed only the text piece of the book.

Since she had mentioned nothing of the work itself, I had asked her if she had actually read the book, to which she replied that she couldn’t be bothered to read it “which should be review enough.”

I responded that it wasn’t a review at all, and said something snarky too, I think. The review isn’t up on her sight as far as I can tell. She, or an admin of the site, deleted my post.

In the interest of full disclosure, I posted anonymously, and it was concerning Byrne’s Doom Patrol #1.

Fair enough, her site, she’s not getting paid to do it, but in light of her also posting an essay on how to write a good review, that particular ‘review’ seemed hypocritical. Why post a review of something that you haven’t even bothered to read?

After that I chose not to consider her reviews anymore in choosing new material to read.

That was my experience with CWR.

I wouldn’t stop reading her reviews either (although I only go out of my way to read reviewers that I find very helpful, like Paul O’Brien). But I do think it’s a bit more than semantics. By calling something a “review” which really isn’t, you’re doing a disservice to your readers, and being unfair to the author of the work in question.

  12. Well, she doesn’t give an opinion about Doom Patrol #1 one way or another, hence it’s not really a review, nor does she claim it to be. Sure, she includes the piece with her actual DC reviews that week, but maybe she just wanted to mention something about the text piece, but thought that it wasn’t worthy of it’s own blog entry. *Shrug*. Who cares? It’s her blog, she can do whatever she wants with it.
