RIP Martin Kasman

Marty Kasman passed away today. He was my daughters’ maternal grandfather, and he was one of the sweetest guys in the world. He passed away quietly of natural causes. He is survived by his wife, Claire, his daughter, Myra (mother of Shana, Gwen and Ariel), his sons Robert and Alex, and numerous grandchildren.

Although I don’t think it appropriate to publicly post Myra’s e-mail, she does read this website regularly, so anyone who wishes to post condolences may do so here.

  1. My condolences. Fortunately, if he was one of the sweetest guys in the world, all who knew him are left with some amazing memories of how he touched and influenced them.

  2. Myra, reading Peter’s numerous mentions of you in his columns and in the forwards to his many novels made it feel like you were part of it all, sitting right there next to him on the log as he told us his stories around the campfire. As I’ve always been a fan not only of Peter’s writing, but of the intelligence he brings to his dicussions and musings on various topics, you were undoubtedly the special woman behind the Storyteller.

I am deeply sorry for your loss, and have faith the inner strength you and your family will exhibit as you come together for this sad time will see you through it.

    Take care of yourselves. 🙂

  5. When I saw Peter at Wizard in Dallas, I asked him if any of the family was joining him. He explained that Gwen was supposed to come with him but instead went to spend time with her Grandfather. He seemed very proud of his daughter making the right choice and choosing family instead of a trip to Dallas. Since then, I’ve kept the family in my thoughts and prayers.

As other people have written, I felt like I knew Myra threw Peter’s writing. I especially remember him talking about how supportive she was when he took over the Hulk. When I heard about the divorce, I felt a sadness that made no sense but I felt like good friends of mine were breaking up and I wished for them both to be happy.

Last year, I lost my Stepfather and my wife lost her Mother, a bad year for us. I understand the family’s pain and I pray for the comfort of God, may she bring you and family peace. Remember death is not an ending but a beginning.

    Keep Hope Alive,

  6. Having lost my own maternal grandmother on June 12 and my mother on October 30, I am feeling only too well what your family is experiencing. Please accept the condolences and best wishes of my wife Nila, our children Kevin & Ryan, and me.

  7. To Claire, Myra and the entire family, I was deeply saddened to hear of Marty’s passing. It was a pleasure seeing him last year for the first time in so many years. I will always remember his sweet smile and knowing wink.

  9. While I’m a couple of days late in posting this, my sympathies as well.

I lost my paternal grandmother a few years back and it was probably the hardest thing I’ve had to deal with in my life so far. Loving grandparents are such hard things to live without.

  10. Myra, I too was very sad to hear about Marty. He was a decent person and an all around good egg. He always had a kind smile and a pleasant greeting. He will be missed. I wish you and your family well.

  12. Myra, Shana, Gwen, and Ariel: my deepest sympathies on your loss. I remember the few times I met him, and he was always gracious and a gentleman. It was a pleasure to have known him. He’ll be missed.

  13. Both Barb and I send our heartfelt sympathies. My mother’s yahrzeit is this week and it brings back the memories of her passing. We wish you all the best.
