A Cowboy Pete Casting Call Kudo to “Desperate Housewives”

One of the fun casting bits on “Desperate Housewives” has been Kathry Joosten as neighborhood busybody Karen McCluskey. Joosten previously was best known as Mrs. Landingham, the formidable Presidential secretary on “West Wing” who met a far-too-soon violent death in a car accident. Eventually she was replaced by Deborah Fiderer, portrayed by the inestimable Lily Tomlin.

So story developments on “Desperate Housewives” have landed Poor Mrs McCluskey in a hëll of a fix, consigned to a hospital’s mental ward as a neighborhood villain has convinced the other residents that Mrs M is having a breakdown. Deciding that she needs reinforcements in the face of such villainy, Mrs. M sends out a call to the toughest woman she knows: Her sister.

Played by Lily Tomlin.

President Bartlett’s two secretaries teamed up. The villain doesn’t stand a chance.

  1. I LOVE those two characters. It’s funny, I totally forgot that she was Mrs. Landingham. I also didn’t know until recently that she won two Emmys for DH.

  3. Indeed she did, Robert. And in a great display of humor after winning her second, she stated (paraphrasing), “This is great. Now that I have two, my two kids don’t have to fight over it when I die.”

  5. And don’t forget you have 2 Lois Lanes on the show: Terri Hatcher (Lois and Clark) and Dana Delany (animated Superman)

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, who previously said the issue of gay marriage should be left up to each state, has announced his opposition to a California ballot measure that would ban same-sex marriages.

  9. Has anyone asked Sorkin what he would have done had he persued doing “Season 8” of West Wing?

I think a better question is what he would have done with a 5th season. The actual Sorkin-less 5th season was at times painful to watch. They began to get their sea legs back with the 6th and the 7th was dámņëd good–aside from the catastrophically out-of-character stupidity with Toby betraying government secrets.

  11. Well, that’s the end of Wisteria Lane. Nuclear devastation in the persons of two former presidential secretaries and two former nosy-assed Daily Planet reporters… the evil neighbor is gray-white ash drifting on the autumn winds… I may need to start watching the show again, despite my aversion to soap operas.

Agreed. I posted too quiickly. I was making a I admit) poorly stated “what does the future hold for Obama/Santos” joke.

  14. All I can say is: well played, DH. I have never sat through an entire episode of DH, but knowing that both Kathryn Joosten and Lily Tomlin are on it (and working together, no less), I may have to check it out. Which is something I never thought I would say about DH.
