As of now, if you look at the sidebar under the cover for “The Camelot Papers,” you’ll see that you can order it off both Amazon and Nook by clicking on the link. We will also have the Print on Demand link up for you shortly, which is at the moment only available through createspace.com, but will be available through Amazon by this time next week.
I’ve listened to your comments and endeavored to keep the price at what seems a reasonable level. I’ve decided the list price will be $5.99 for the eBook. But as a special offer, for the first sixteen days (8 x 2) I’ll be keeping it at $4.99. The POD will have a flat price of $15.99.
Also, a number of people have raised the question of being able to lend the eBook to others who have electronic readers. This seems to be something of a hot button issue. After giving it a good deal of thought, I’ve decided that it’s important to me to have an eBook be as similar to a regular book as possible. So you’ll note that the eBook has unlimited simultaneous device usage and that I’ve enabled the lending function. Obviously I want to sell as many copies as possible, but lending books one-to-one is a time honored tradition and I’m disinclined to deprive readers of that opportunity.
And just to make things interesting: if you ARE planning to buy it, particularly off Amazon, try to do so around 4 PM Eastern Time (1 PM Pacific) Friday. Why? To see if we can kick it up the sales charts. If we get off to a fast start, it can have long-term ramifications.
Okay, people…get Crazy.

UPDATE: For those of you reading this in RSS feeds, the links:

I was going to go buy it now until I read about waiting until one o’clock my time tomorrow. However, I won’t be someplace that I can order it at that time. Will it still help the “sales chart” if I wait until tomorrow evening or should I go ahead and buy it tonight?
I’m all about digital. Digital comics. Digital books. Digital “CDs.” Digital movies. Anything that I can enjoy but don’t have to find a place to store sounds great to me.
Nah, go ahead and buy it now if tomorrow is inconvenient.

Bought it before this post when life sorry. What is the format of the print on demand version(hardcover with a jacket, paperback, etc)?
Trade paperback.

Not in a million years.
On my Kindle and up next after the current (long) book I’m reading. Looking forward to it. Thanks for keeping it so affordable and good luck with this venture.
Oddly, searching Amazon for “The Camelot Papers” doesn’t turn this up. Also, is there a non-Kindle ebook format available (for, say, iBooks users like me)?
Simply download the kindle app. I have it on my ipad and iphone, it works really well.
Amazon had a “technical issue” that it took a mere three days of us screaming at them to fix. If you search now, you’ll find it. And Kathleen also has an iPad with the Kindle ap; we tested it and it downloaded just fine onto it.

I just added a reminder to my Outlook calendar to order the book at 1:00 Pacific time. I will order the Kindle version for my Kindle app on my iPad. Can’t wait to read it this weekend.
I’ll be getting this sometime around dinner tonight (we eat early). Looking forward to it. And $5 is a GREAT price.
Done and done.
PAD –
I’ve got a Kindle app on my iPhone so will be making the purchase in 4 hours at the requested time. Typically I’m one of those “I like books I can hold and smell” Luddites so this will be a first e-book purchase for me.
.
I assume (correctly?) that the POD version will be available for a loooong time to come, should I decide reading a novel on a screen just isn’t for me?
.
Thanks.
As long as there’s demand for it, it will be there. That’s the joy of Print on Demand.
.
PAD
That makes sense. But it then leads me to wonder how much demand is enough demand. I assume (There I go again. You digress, I assume. Except now I seem to be digressing…) you wouldn’t want to be doing print runs of 1-2 copies.
Actually, POD is exactly about runs of 1-2 copies, is it not? Isn’t the whole point of POD that they can print up an individual copy of a book using “modern” computer/printing tech and assemble a single copy for a single reader?
I’d assume POD allows for smaller print runs than traditional book production, but that there would still be some economies of scale that would require a minimum order of more than 1-2.
.
But I really wouldn’t know.
Bought on amazon.co.uk sorry I have no idea when 4pm Eastern time is:)
I didn’t know e-books had a lending function. Kudos for enabling it
P.s. can anybody tell me how to lend the book to my wife, from my Kindle app (on ipad) to her Kindle.
There is an Amazon help page here that explains how to lend a Kindle book:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200549320
Note that you can only lend a book once, and only for a period of 14 days. While it is being lent, you cannot read on any of your devices.
I assume that many people don’t know that you don’t need a Kindle or Nook device to read these eBooks. You may want to add information to the FAQ on the website to tell readers that they can download applications for their computers, tablets, and smartphones to read your book.
Forgive my obtuseness, but if you wanted to lend the book to your wife, couldn’t you just hand her the iPad?
Well, sure, but what if you want to lend the book to the Peter David fan on your bowling team who you see once a week. I doubt you’d just want to hand him your iPad and hope he brings it back in one piece the following week.

I don’t think Amazon have rolled out the lending feature in the UK yet so you might be out of luck (they hadn’t last time I checked).
Sean, if I lent my wife my Ipad, what would I read my comics on:)
Thanks Peter, and thanks for making it available in the UK at the same time too (don’t know if that requires much effort but I’ve been annoyed by it before).
I picked it up last night, it seems strangely apropos given everything that’s going on over at the moment…
Mein Gott! That was painful.
.
Even though I used the Kindle application that I’ve long had on my iPhone to access the Kindle Store, the store kept claiming that “you have no Kindle app or device listed. Click here to get one.” After several attempts to convince it otherwise I gave in, deleted the Kindle app, and clicked “here” to install it from scratch.
.
And, of course, it continued to insist I didn’t have one.
.
Finally occurred to me that my phone is registered with Amazon under a different account than my usual Amazon account. So I de-registered my phone with Amazon, set up a new Amazon account and re-registered the phone with that account just to be sure I knew what account was being used.
.
Several more attempts. Several more times trying to get into the Kindle Store and, again, each time being forced to start from the begining and search for The Camelot Papers. (Why the Kindle Store app can’t remember where I am when I switch over to another app and then back I don’t know.)
.
ANYway… if I had to guess I’d figure the “1-click” purchase process took me about 112 clicks and over half an our. Supposedly the book is downloading now.
.
As I said earlier, this is the first e-book I’ll have bought. I’m one of those “I like the heft and smell of a physical book in my hand” types. And it’s going to be a loooong time before I try purchasing one again.
Well, first of all, I appreciate you going to the effort. All I can tell you is that your experience is not a typical one, and if you do find you enjoy reading a book electronically, I would think you wouldn’t encounter the same problems a second time.
.
PAD
I assume I won’t. Clearly I had some setup to do before things would work right. And I did realize that at the time. But Amazon certainly could have made that easier than it was.
.
And I appreciate your going thru the effort of keeping me very entertained for the last several years.
Sorry. Did not wait for the appropriate time. Got all excited when I saw it on Amazon last night and I grabbed it up and have already started reading it. Okay, not that sorry I guess. 🙂
Even though I’m out of town right now, I realized about half an hour ago (or 4:45pm Eastern) that it was past the time you requested people to buy. I just bought a Kindle edition, and its at #6,418 Paid in Kindle Store right now in the rankings.
I’m glad the price for the eBook is lower than the print, especially since its a POD (from PAD) in paperback. And thank you for the sale price of $4.99. Good luck on this and future endeavors.
Bought and thanks for the discount for people who read your blog and letting us know about it.
Hey, Peter. Please do let us know, if you can, how many copies were bought around the 1:00 time. Did it accomplish what you’ve aimed for?
I don’t know about the numbers, Sean, but here’s the Amazon Kindle rankings as of 10pm Eastern:
#2,378 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
#9 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Fiction > Fantasy > Historical
#15 in Books > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy > Historical
#17 in Books > Literature & Fiction > World Literature > Mythology
Hope this helps.
Thanks, Tony.

Can you elaborate? I’m finding this whole “how things in book publishing actually work” rather interesting.
Hi Peter,
Is there any chance of getting a standard e-pub format from somewhere? Australia doesn’t have Barnes and Noble so that rules out the Nook, the Kindles aren’t too common down here so I got a Kobo… only problem is it does rule out e-books from Amazon.
I second that request – I have a Sony Reader (which uses the epub format), and I don’t have a smartphone/iPad to run an app on. I could install the Kindle app on my desktop PC, but I like being able to carry ebooks around with me, e.g. to read on the train.
Errrr — is there going to be a Kobo version of this?
Yes, there will. Should be up by next week.
.
PAD
Awesome!
Oh, and sorry for not being able to participate in your sales efforts. I live in Canada and the Nook app for the iPad is not available to me, nor are America-only books on the Kindle.
I just bought my first e-book. Cool.
While I’ll be going with the POD version (no eReader, and my PC is 10 years old and painfully slow), I look forward to hearing how the electronic format does. If it does well, I hope that gives some of the “comic book sales are horrible, what shall we do?” people the impetus to expanding to the electronic realm.
Once again, I was late to the party. Personal engagements prevented me from ordering the book at the appointed time. Sorry about that. However, I did buy it through Barnes & Noble’s “Nook for PC” and it’s the first e-book that I’ve purchased and downloaded onto my PC! It will probably be awhile before I attempt this again, but know that I probably wouldn’t have attempted it if I didn’t feel that I was purchasing a quality product by a proven talent while contributing, in a small way, to the future of independent publishing.
I wish you success with your new venture, Peter.
Completely off topic I know, but what happened to yesterday’s BID? It was there when I first logged on yesterday, but when I came back to the site later in the day it had vanished.
We pulled it temporarily so the Crazy 8 announcement would stay up top longer. I schedule the BID postings weeks in advance usually so sometimes these timing issues happen. It should be up again next week.
Bought it on Friday but I had some of the same issues as others posted above. The “one-click” didn’t work with one click but I eventually got it…then I couldn’t put it down. Well actually I did several times (I have two young children so…) however my first e-book experience was a very pleasant one.
Finished it last night. What a ride. Once again, your ability to make the familiar, fresh and new, is unmatched.
A very enjoyable read and not at all what I thought it would be…although I did think it would be enjoyable, just not the story I thought I would be getting.
Great stuff.
That’s great to hear, Todd. Glad you liked it. Be sure to tell your friends. For that matter, if you’re so inclined, post a review on Amazon. Remember, we don’t have a publicity department or sales force. We’re counting on word of mouth for success.

So, if I approach you at Comicon would you sign my copy? A digital signature would be fine. %^)
Yeah, you can do that now. That’s amazing to me. Corey came up to me with his iPad and this special rubber tipped pen that enabled me to sign a screen capture he’d done of the cover.

How much do you think I can get for it on eBay? Oh, wait…
For your Australian readers, I ran across this on Nina Bruhns website:
“I’ve received a lot of emails from frustrated readers overseas, especially in Australia, wanting to purchase my books for their Kindle. But without a US credit card, it seemed impossible.
I have recently learned of a solution to this problem!
Here’s what you do:
1) Log onto Amazon.com and set up an account using your Australian (or wherever you are) credit card and an email address from somewhere like gmail (or use an account and email you might already have set up). This will be Account A and Email Address A.
2) Purchase an Amazon.com gift card, but send it to yourself at a second email. This is Email Address B. Be sure this email does not already have an Amazon account attached to it. You must not have a credit card of any kind attached to this email at Amazon.
3) Log off Amazon Account A.
4) Set up a second Amazon.com account, Account B, using Email Address B. This is the email where you have already sent your gift card.
5) Use the gift card to purchase your Kindle ebooks.
6) You’ll need to download your ebooks to your computer, and use your USB connection to load them onto your Kindle, since the autodownload feature does not work in most overseas countries. This is because the kind of wireless connection the Kindle uses to talk to the mothership is not available most countries.
I understand the same process works for Apple itunes.
Please let me know how it goes!!!”
Peter,
I have a dumb question. Can I download this on my Android? I have the kindle app. Good Luck with future sales and I will check out amazon and go from there. BTW who do we need to take hostage….err..bug at CBS about giving you another Star Trek contract? LOL
You have the Kindle app? Then I don’t see why not.

As for CBS, all kidding aside, I wish I knew what to tell you.

That’s how I got it, via my Android.

You know, if I had heard that sentence uttered five years ago I would have been really excited about the future…and probably a bit dissapointed when it arrived.
Hey folks, you don’t need an Android or iPhone/iPad/iThought whichever.
You can download the software directly to your PC at

Aw man. I thought this was gonna be about Leslie Shappe. 🙁
I ordered a copy through my Kindle yesterday.
The problem I have is, I’m currently reading A Dance With Dragons. I should be able to read The Camelot Papers sometime in August (2012 ;-)).
Peter,
LOL..I used my kindle app and just typed your name in and hit send. The Camelot Papers was the first one on list. I hit download and within in 20 seconds I was reading my first ebook. What is scary is that I see alot of my old trek books and I am tempted to downlaod. I settled on Q Squared and I think Imzadi is next. LOL I am like a kid in a candy store! BTW The Camelot Papers is EXCELLENT so far!
