But first the daily Peter David Update: He was able with assistance to get up and sit in a chair where he spent most of the day. He worked with his various physical therapy and occupational therapy personnel on continuing to strengthen his arm and leg. The eye seems to be correcting itself a little but that’s going to be looked at in rehab as to what they can do besides a stylish eye-patch. He also revised an X-Factor script for his editor at Marvel, which I think made him feel good/more normal than he has been feeling.
Remember the waiting game? Well we MIGHT be moving him to his rehab facility but it is not a done deal because they don’t like some of the markers in various pieces of blood work. It may be an aberration and they are going to test him six ways from Sunday this morning to give us a go or no go on his going to rehab today. We have all the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle in place except the Doctor’s OK to go.
Hard to believe that one week ago all this started.
Now HOW YOU CAN HELP
Even though we have health insurance we have co-pays and the like. And since this stroke fell at the end of the year, we have all the new co-pays to deal with (I can honestly see those of you who have had to deal with this nodding your heads). And there are things that the insurance company just won’t cover (more head nodding). So we are at the beginning of what is going to be a very expensive year even though we are only 4 days in.
The most direct way is to buy his books from Crazy 8 Press (via ComicMix) or from Amazon or Barnes and Noble websites. These are books that he gets the money from directly and the most per book.
His current Crazy 8 Press books are:
Pulling Up Stakes Part 1
Pulling Up Stakes Part 2 (Brand new)
This is one novel broken into two pieces. This is the cover blurb
Sick of vampire books? Movies? TV shows? Yeah. So are we. Sick of the entire unlife of vampires? Yeah. So is Vince Hammond. Unfortunately, Vince is in it up to his (wait for it) neck. Because Vince is a young vampire hunter who lives with his vampire hunter mother in an entire community of vampire hunters, who in turn are part of a cult of vampire hunters going back all the way to the French Revolution, which many believe to be an uprising of the poor against the rich but was actually a massive purging of vampires from the French nobility (hence the guillotine)
The Camelot Papers
A powerful ruler who’s considered by many to be simple-minded and vacuous and has serious father issues. A no-nonsense, polarizing woman who favors pants suits and pursues dubious agendas involving social needs. A remarkably magnetic leader of men with a reputation as a skirt-chaser. A scheming, manipulative adviser who is constantly trying to control public perceptions. A man seen as the next, great hope for the people, except there are disputes over his background and many contend he’s not what he appears to be.
George W? Hillary and Bill? Karl Rove? Obama?
Try Arthur Pendragon, Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin, and Galahad.
Whatever you think of the state of today’s politics, The Camelot Papers shows you just how little matters have changed in the past thousand years or so. The Camelot Papers presents a fresh perspective on Arthurian legend by using modern day sensibility and combining it with a classic tale to bring a new insight into iconic characters.
The Hidden Earth Saga of which there are two published and the third is in the works.
Darkness of the Light (book 1 of the Hidden Earth saga)
Height of the Depths (Book 2 of the Hidden Earth saga)
These are science fiction mixed with mythological creatures and the fate of the Universe hangs in the balance. Big epic sweeping books with those great characters that Peter is famous for writing.
There are Print on Demand for all these books if you want a paper copy rather than electronic.
More HOW YOU CAN HELP
If you already have these or can’t purchase them for whatever reason, you can still help us a lot by getting word out all over the Internet about how they can help Peter. I am asking every blogger and people who have access to an audience to spread the word.
The more we sell of these books, the easier it will be for us to pay the bills as they start to pour in.
Buying his other books does help but that is very long term and isn’t much per books but it does help especially the Marvel graphic novels he has written.
I am talking to Glenn about a donate button or something but we don’t have the details worked out and I really want to get the ball rolling on getting this information out while Peter is fresh in everyone’s mind.
We do need your help to help him. He is working very hard at getting back to all that he loves to do and we are trying to ease his mind about whatever we can ease his mind about so he can do it faster.
We are now off to the Hospital to see what the verdict is about his moving today. I will update this when we know what is going on.
I am grateful to everyone who has helped or is going to help Peter.

Just bought the two Hidden Earth books. Here’s to a speedy recovery for my favorite X-Factor author!
My thoughts are with Peter! It’s great that he’s improving, and even better that it sounds like the “him” of himself was left untouched – you can work around physical issues, or maybe retrain the brain, but I suspect it’d be a lot harder to work around loss of self/humor/mental faculties/etc.
I’m going to be getting a Kindle soon, and I was already considering purchasing the Camelot Papers; but my question is, does he get a bigger cut if I purchase from Crazy 8 vs. Amazon? I ask because I don’t have a credit card, but I have the cash saved up – I *was* simply going to get an Amazon gift card, but if Peter gets a significantly bigger cut from C8, I’ll get one of the generic ones instead. And Pulling Up Stakes sounds like it should be hilariously fun, too…
At least for Pulling Up Stakes, when you hit the link at Crazy 8 it takes you to Amazon.
It’s the same cut no matter what. 🙂
Thank you – that’s good to know! Didn’t realize that the links took you to Amazon anyway.
Yes, thank you – I had the same question!
Best wishes to you all.
Peter gets the biggest cut via Crazy 8’s deal with ComicMix.
Kathleen thanks for keeping us updated! How are you holdin up? I can imagine the difficulties… My thoughts and prayers are with you… What is crazy8? Send Peter my love, assure him his fans will do all they can

Not to be nosy, but I know the cost/pay ratios are different. Does it help more to buy the ebooks or the hard copies?
The ratios are different, but the actual amount cleared per unit is close. Biggest amount per unit is buying through ComicMix.
Just bought the Camelot Papers and Pulling up
The stakes. It’s the least I can do and will spread the word.
My brother in law went through the same ordeal and he is doing better 1 year later. stay string and follow your docs advice to the letter. impressed and appreciative of the progress he’s already made.
The kindle editions can also be gifted very easily. Speedy recovery and the best to all of your family…you’ve always given us so much…
Thank you.

Thank you.
Bought them all. Best to your family.
PAD was the first comics writer to sign a book for me, and has been a good dude in our interactions on Facebook. Just bought all the Crazy 8 books from Amazon, and giving him happy thoughts for a quick, full recovery.
I hope all the best for Peter’s recovery. Do you know if it’s better to buy the Kindle or the paperback versions of his books (when there is an option)?
I just powered up my Nook for the first time in almost six months and grabbed Darkness of the Light. Peter’s book on writing comics has been a great help to me and I’m happy to do my bit to help him.
You might also be interested to know that e-books can be purchased in Barnes and Noble stores and given to anyone who has a Nook (or a non-Kindle device that can access the Nook app) so even if you already own all the books above you can still gift copies to those who don’t.
Could a Kickstarter help? Or is that something to consider further down the line when it becomes a bit more apparent about how much money might be needed to help and support? Sending all our best wishes, Peter – here’s hoping you start feeling better soon, Sir.
I was sorry to hear about Peter’s stroke, but happy to be able to help in some small way. Just bought the books, and will keep an eye out for any future donation option.
From a long-time fan, get well soon, Peter!
I hope to make a purchase or two soon. Take heart, Peter. I had a stroke a couple of years ago, resulting in partial loss of mobility on my left side and I made a full recovery. I sincerely wish you the same.
I’m going to buy some books.
Some advice (though I know you’re very busy with other things right now): For the e-books, you’d like us to order through Amazon, correct? If that’s the case, I suggest signing up for Amazon Associates, which gives you a cut of every item sold through custom links that you create. You can post those custom links to all his books in this blog entry and in an eventual “donation” page. It won’t earn you that much more money, but every little bit counts.
Here’s the website for signing up. http://affiliate-program.amazon.com/
Because I know you guys are very busy, this would be a good project to hand off to a family member who needs something to do.
Just for info, the Kindle books can be bought in the UK by following the links from the Crazy8 website and changing the .com in the URL into .co.uk.
The B&N books can be found via http://uk.nook.com/s/peter-david?%5Bs%5Dkeyword=Peter%20David though off the top of my head I’ve no idea what the format is. They describe is as ‘Nook Book’. I expect Calibre could convert it into something useable.

Just bought the Pulling Up Stakes book (they are that cheap?!)…and am spreading word. Best regards to you and your family…please stay strong! My world will be diminished if you went away 🙁
How about digital comics purchases? I’d like to help out Peter (his Hulk got me started in comics 22 years ago) and I’ve been meaning to get caught up on x-factor. If I buy from the comixology website will he receive royalties?
Peter will get royalties from comics purchases, but he’ll get a smaller amount (split between artists, publishers, etc.) and it’ll come later. The books we listed earlier will get more money into Peter’s pocket quicker– and we’re working on increasing the turnaround time with new vendors. We’ll keep you posted.
In fact, here’s one: http://www.comicmix.com/news/2013/01/04/help-peter-david-by-buying-his-e-books-now/
As a fellow person who has had a stroke(nearly 2.5 years ago) I can definitely sympathize. I’m still dealing with physical and mental issues but it will get better over time. I will definitely buy some digital works and spread the word.
X-Factor won’t write itself after all. Yet. I’m sure the House of Mousey Ideas is working on the Peter David LMD/ButlerBot as I type this and nobody wants that.
Thanks so much for giving us an avenue to help! His work has meant a lot to me over the years, and having an avenue to help AND get exposure to more of his work is just perfect. I hope he has a very speedy recovery!
2 books bought (although I would have bought them anyway). Will happily donate extra cash via paypal too if it helps, and will also Facebook a post later too.
Get well Peter. My dad had a major stroke years ago, so I understand your frustrations right now. Try to remain positive if you can – depression could be a real problem if you’re not prepared for it.
I’m recovering from serious surgery myself, and am only recently able to type. I’m hoping to start PT soon. I just adore Peter, and he is one of my favorite authors. I have no money, am uninsured, so what I have must go there. But I will spread the word as far and wide as I can. And for whatever its worth, I will send him strength and healing as much as I can. He has a lot of supporters: we’ll make this happen!
That’s great news that he was in good enough shape to revise a script; I’m sure that was a huge relief to both of you.
And thanks for the info; will do, and will pass it along!
Please pass both my and my wife Carmela’s thoughts, prayers and well wishes on to Peter. We had the pleasure of performing with him in Man of LaMancha in 2007 as Quixote and Aldonsa. We will pass the word on how to help and do what we can. All the best to you Sancho.
Any plans for a fund-raising art auction? If so, please count me in. I’m sure I can get art donations by a number of cartoonists and illustrators, too.
And please give Peter my very best wishes for a complete recovery! And although we’ve never met, best wishes to you, Kathleen. I’m sure you’re frazzled by all of this, but every funnybook pro needs a person like you in their corner.
Aloha,
Scott!
great news, thanks for this informations 😉
Lots of Reddiots patiently waiting for a Donate button on the blog (some people would just rather give all their money to Peter, lol).

Kathleen –
I’ve been a fan of Peter’s since midway thru the issue where Jean DeWolf was killed when I had to flip to the credits page to see who wrote this great stuff. I haven’t gotten everything he’s written since, but most of it.
I’ll be placing an order thru Crazy 8 this afternoon for the several recent items I don’t have. It’s the very least I can do for someone who has given me so much enjoyment and inspiration for so many years.
My best wishes to Peter, Caroline, you and the rest of your family.
Donating via PayPal couldn’t be easier – please check into it, I’m certain many of Peter’s fans would like 100% of their dollar to go to him, and that you’d see a good # of these dollars come in.
Just heard about Peter from a friend. I am so sorry to hear of this, but very happy to hear that he is on the road to recovery.
As a lifelong comic fan for over 40 years now, one of the highlights of my geek-life was back in the 90’s when Peter called me up one day to talk to me over an idea I had sent him for the Incredible Hulk. We spoke for over an hour, and it still brings a smile to my face.
Plus, since we live local to you, there were a few times when i would run into him, either at the South Shore Mall or over at the Borders books in Sayville.
Please give him my regards, and that we all are thinking of him.
Andrew DiGregorio
Bought the second “Pulling Up Stakes” before Xmas and will be getting the “Camelot Papers” very soon. Prayers and best wishes for you both.
Just purchased the Hidden Earth books and Pulling Up Stakes 2 (already had the first part). Looking forward to seeing a donate button appear so I can help further. Hang in there, PAD. Your fans and friends are all pulling for you.
Just purchased the Camelot Papers through B&N Nook Books. I’ll also do my best to spread the word as well.
I worked as a rehab nurse for many years, working both with post stroke patients and as an orthopedic nurse until my own health problems made me leave the job I loved. I know first hand the hard work ahead for both you, and Peter, as a family. Know that I’ve seen miracles in my days as a nurse, seen people come back from amazing challenges.
The most important thing in all of it was always family love and involvement in the recovery phase. Knowing you’re loved, that you have a life, loved ones, and a home to come back to, can never be stressed enough in making a huge difference in the fight to get back what was lost.
I know that Peter has this. It shines in ever word he writes talking about all of you. And it shines here in your posts about him. Tell him we’re all rooting for him out here in the hinterlands. I know he’s going to win this fight. 🙂
Just bought Pulling Up Stakes.

Off to buy books and to blog about this as well. Get well soon, Peter!
I will definitely help out when you can get a donate function set up. I remember when my dad had a stroke years ago, and his insurance only paid for so much therapy, which he needed badly. He was cut off, but thankfully there was a therapist who helped out in her free time as much as she could. Our family still received a huge bill for things the insurance didn’t cover. We paid it over time, but I can definitely sympathize with Peter & family. Your fans love ya, man! Get well soon.
please make a botton to donate with paypal, i live in chile and i imagine that if all the money go directly to peter is the best thing to do, if in a few days dont have any diferent form to donate i buy a digital book (i dont have a kindlee too)
