But first the daily Peter David Update: He was able with assistance to get up and sit in a chair where he spent most of the day. He worked with his various physical therapy and occupational therapy personnel on continuing to strengthen his arm and leg. The eye seems to be correcting itself a little but that’s going to be looked at in rehab as to what they can do besides a stylish eye-patch. He also revised an X-Factor script for his editor at Marvel, which I think made him feel good/more normal than he has been feeling.
Remember the waiting game? Well we MIGHT be moving him to his rehab facility but it is not a done deal because they don’t like some of the markers in various pieces of blood work. It may be an aberration and they are going to test him six ways from Sunday this morning to give us a go or no go on his going to rehab today. We have all the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle in place except the Doctor’s OK to go.
Hard to believe that one week ago all this started.
Now HOW YOU CAN HELP
Even though we have health insurance we have co-pays and the like. And since this stroke fell at the end of the year, we have all the new co-pays to deal with (I can honestly see those of you who have had to deal with this nodding your heads). And there are things that the insurance company just won’t cover (more head nodding). So we are at the beginning of what is going to be a very expensive year even though we are only 4 days in.
The most direct way is to buy his books from Crazy 8 Press (via ComicMix) or from Amazon or Barnes and Noble websites. These are books that he gets the money from directly and the most per book.
His current Crazy 8 Press books are:
Pulling Up Stakes Part 1
Pulling Up Stakes Part 2 (Brand new)
This is one novel broken into two pieces. This is the cover blurb
Sick of vampire books? Movies? TV shows? Yeah. So are we. Sick of the entire unlife of vampires? Yeah. So is Vince Hammond. Unfortunately, Vince is in it up to his (wait for it) neck. Because Vince is a young vampire hunter who lives with his vampire hunter mother in an entire community of vampire hunters, who in turn are part of a cult of vampire hunters going back all the way to the French Revolution, which many believe to be an uprising of the poor against the rich but was actually a massive purging of vampires from the French nobility (hence the guillotine)
The Camelot Papers
A powerful ruler who’s considered by many to be simple-minded and vacuous and has serious father issues. A no-nonsense, polarizing woman who favors pants suits and pursues dubious agendas involving social needs. A remarkably magnetic leader of men with a reputation as a skirt-chaser. A scheming, manipulative adviser who is constantly trying to control public perceptions. A man seen as the next, great hope for the people, except there are disputes over his background and many contend he’s not what he appears to be.
George W? Hillary and Bill? Karl Rove? Obama?
Try Arthur Pendragon, Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin, and Galahad.
Whatever you think of the state of today’s politics, The Camelot Papers shows you just how little matters have changed in the past thousand years or so. The Camelot Papers presents a fresh perspective on Arthurian legend by using modern day sensibility and combining it with a classic tale to bring a new insight into iconic characters.
The Hidden Earth Saga of which there are two published and the third is in the works.
Darkness of the Light (book 1 of the Hidden Earth saga)
Height of the Depths (Book 2 of the Hidden Earth saga)
These are science fiction mixed with mythological creatures and the fate of the Universe hangs in the balance. Big epic sweeping books with those great characters that Peter is famous for writing.
There are Print on Demand for all these books if you want a paper copy rather than electronic.
More HOW YOU CAN HELP
If you already have these or can’t purchase them for whatever reason, you can still help us a lot by getting word out all over the Internet about how they can help Peter. I am asking every blogger and people who have access to an audience to spread the word.
The more we sell of these books, the easier it will be for us to pay the bills as they start to pour in.
Buying his other books does help but that is very long term and isn’t much per books but it does help especially the Marvel graphic novels he has written.
I am talking to Glenn about a donate button or something but we don’t have the details worked out and I really want to get the ball rolling on getting this information out while Peter is fresh in everyone’s mind.
We do need your help to help him. He is working very hard at getting back to all that he loves to do and we are trying to ease his mind about whatever we can ease his mind about so he can do it faster.
We are now off to the Hospital to see what the verdict is about his moving today. I will update this when we know what is going on.
I am grateful to everyone who has helped or is going to help Peter.

I wish Mr David a full and speedy recovery.
I’ve been reading Mr David’s books for twenty years now, ever since I picked up a copy of “A Rock and a Hard Place” in my local library. Through Trek, Apropros, Arthur, Aquaman, X-Factor, Young Justice and various other books and comics, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed his work, which has given me many hours of happiness.
Would like to donate more directly, but for now I’ve ordered Camelot Papers and Height of the Depths(not quite sure how I missed a Darkness sequel…), but I can’t see any way to buy paperback versions of either of the “Pulling Up Stakes” books – can anyone post a direct link to them?
Done and done. Good Grief, the Hidden Earth eBooks are extremely affordable on the Nook.
Here’s hoping Peter has a steady, stable recovery. My father suffered more than one stroke in his lifetime…it was a struggle, but he was eventually able to regain most of his physicality. Peter is a good number of years younger, so hopefully he will be able to do likewise. Best wishes to the family.
Thanks Kathleen,
I’m a fan, and I while I wish him well, talk is cheap so I’m glad I have a way to help in a more meaningfull way.
Good health to you both,
B.
Same here, been meaning to get the Pulling Up Stakes books for ages and now I’m all Kindle’d up on my S3, I can’t think of a better reason to buy them……other than to, you know, enjoy them 🙂
Hope the recovery goes well for you all!
Distressed by the news, but reassured as we read of the excellent care being rendered. Best wishes from both of us, to all of you!
Thank you very much for the update Kathleen, I just purchased all of these books and I really look forward to reading them on my Kindle. I’ve been a huge fan of Peter’s comic book work for years, and I know I’ll love his prose work too. So much so that I filmed these at a panel a few years ago in Philadelphia. (probably wasn’t supposed to, but what did I know I was just out of high school and excited to see one of my favorite comic book writers) 2 fantastic stories from Peter. Love them both, and I thought I’d share them here for other fans of Peter to enjoy. They both always bring a smile to my face.

Thank you again and I hope Peter makes a quick and full recovery.
Thanks Kathleen for the news.
I’m writing from Italy and I hope, like all the italian reader of his stories, he can get better.
I bought the Hidden Earth Saga books and I get word out how can help Peter to other.
As a stroke survivor myself, I know how much hard work lies ahead for him. Do NOT believe the predictions of how much function he will recover. I was told I’d never drive, bathe or dress myself again. It took a while, but I live and travel independently now. Conventional wisdom is that recovers ends 6 months out. Reality is that 7 years later I’m still regaining function in tiny increments. Never give up hope!
I had the first Pulling Up Stakes but just bought all the rest from Amazon. I also have spread the word as far as I can and will be podcasting about Peter over the next few weeks. I will also be posting reviews of the books along with the info of how it helps your family.
Our thoughts are with you

I’m sorry to hear of your stroke; I’ve enjoyed your writing in CBG for many years.
I’m a stroke survivor myself; in 2004, I suffered a sudden stroke while at work and wasn’t able to move my left arm or leg (but there was no effect on my vision or speech). Fortunately, after several weeks of hospitalization and therapy I regained full movement of those limbs and am back to normal.
I’ll get some of these ordered tomorrow. I’ve pushed the news out to all my Twitter contacts – My best wishes to the whole family and I wish Peter my best. I have been reading him avidly since picking up an old Trek book years ago with some triangular alien in it that built a very large weapon and blew itself to kingdom come! Still one of the funniest things I’ve ever read.
I hope Peter has a speedy recovery. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.
If the books are purchased through Apple does Peter get the same cut? And are all of his books available through Apple?
Many of his Star Trek books are available through Apple, but he doesn’t get as large of a cut, nor will he see the royalties for Star Trek sales made today for 6 months at least. To buy books that will get into his bank account the fastest, go to ComicMix.
I hope Peter has a speedy recovery. Ive been reading his stories and columns for decades. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Have you tired to get in touch with HERO INITIATIVE via Jim Mclaughlin? They don’t reach out to individuals but have helped those in need that ask! I do not exactly what the criteria is for them helping out, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask–if you need contact information or would want ME to find out for you, please let me know. I had the pleasure of working with Peter on WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #40-42–please wish him well and give him my best.
Jim’s on my to-do list to call. The Hero Initiative is a phenomenal organization that I’ve been proud to work with in the past, helping out John Ostrander.
how about putting up some original manuscripts for something like, but i digress, autographed on ebay….i will bid for that
hate that someone with insurance still has to ask for help
need the republicans to tell us once more why universal health insurance isnt needed
You can always count on Peter to deliver value for the work he sells; you can count on him. Here’s to the kind of recovery that a honest worker deserves.
Purchased. Please get better soon, You are in our Prayers.
So glad to hear he’s feeling well enough to work a bit. All my love and support to you guys. Peter is a gift to the sci-fi, fantasy, and comics world.
OK,bought the books (but waiting for Height of Depths to epub on Crazy8 so you get a better cut).
Still want a donate button or an official address to send a check … I got Christmas money burning a hole in my pocket, and 3.99 is just an inadequate reward for all the days of reading pleasure PAD has given me.
God bless the whole David clan!
Thanks for your update. Wishing Peter a fast and full recovery. I’m happy to help and I’m looking forward to reading his books.
We’re certainly pulling for a speedy recovery for Peter and I’ve shared the info and links on our site – although we mainly focus on table top gaming. I had the great pleasure of meeting your husband about five years ago at Wizard World L.A. and he was a joy to chat with and spent nearly an hour talking with my brother, our friend, and myself. Your hubby is certainly a good guy and really down to earth. Here’s hoping Peter is up and back doing his thing as quickly as possible!
“There are Print on Demand for all these books if you want a paper copy rather than electronic.”
Can anybody point out where the Print on Demand link is for the “Pulling up the Stakes” books?
Thanks!
Good luck man, have been a huge fan since TNG Vendetta…buying all the crazy8 stuff right now.
Get well soon!
I’ve got to admit, news of Peter David’s stroke hit me hard. He doesn’t know it, but he’s been an influence in my life. He was the first person of my generation who made it in comics.
He and I are the original Generation X. While it became a popular way to describe those weaned on MTV, the term originated from a novel by Douglas Coupland that was about people our age — late Baby Boomers, born in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
From our perspective looking up, early Baby Boomers got it all. As Coupland describes it, they swept through the job market like locusts, devouring all the best positions and feeling entitled simply because of their luck of birth order. Our generation came to adulthood in a period of recession and chaos. We were the first generation since World War II forced to take McJobs to survive (little did we know this would become, as they say today, the “new normal”).
The comics industry was no different from others. As the World War II generation of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby faded away, they were replaced by early- or pre-Baby Boomers Roy Thomas, Denny O’Neil, Neil Adams, Jim Shooter. It seemed like every time a new artist or writer would come along that I liked — Jim Starlin, Walt Simonson, Steve Englehart, Marshall Rogers — my admiration would fade a little when I found out they were from that early Baby Boomer generation.
Then along comes Peter David. The first story of his I saw was a 1985 fill-in issue of The Amazing Spider-Man, a delightful, off-beat tale, “The Commuter Cometh.” It was a brilliant idea — Spider-Man’s an urban hero, web-swinging between Manhattan skyscrapers. What happens if we put him in suburbia? Hilarity ensues. It was the freshest take on the character I’d seen in probably a decade. I knew this David guy was special. And when I found out he was my age, that gave him a lock on my heart. I bought pretty much everything he wrote for years, and even today when I dip back into comics or genre fiction, I’ll check out what he’s done. Nothing he wrote ever sucked. I knew why. Being a back-end Baby Boomer means you can never mail it in. You have to establish your rep and cred every time out.
Peter David showed me what was possible, and over the years I’ve made a pretty good living as a writer. Today there are a lot of us Gen-Xers in the marketplace. We’re now that older generation, no doubt resented by the younger generations coming up. And so it goes.
I was sorry to hear of the stroke, and am sorry for Peter David and his family and his friends, but I probably am selfishly sorry for myself, because he’s one of my peeps and what happens to him means it can happen to any of us. But I know he’ll get through this, because he’s from a generation that not only had to have talent to survive, but also chutzpah and grit. Rehab from a stroke isn’t easy, but then, nothing in life has been easy. I wish Peter David the best, and I look forward to reading his work long into the future.
Just bought both Hidden earth on Kindle, sent some New Frontier to some friends. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do.
I know full well about the “hurry up and wait” scenario that is hospitalization. Fingers crossed that Monday comes off as planned.
And I just got the two Hidden Earth books (I couldn’t find a paperback for Pulling Up Stakes), so I hope that helps defray things a bit too!
David is one of the best writers I have ever read from. We met once at a convention and cherished the moment. Love all his Trek books and comics. Glad to help promote.
I read his comic books (spiderman I think) years ago but vampires don’t interest me. A wish for a speedy recovery.
Will forward on internet as much as possible and buy stuff as able. Love you guys! 🙂 mike
Just ordered “The Camelot Papers” and “Darkness of the Light” from Amazon.
I have met Peter David a few times. I love his work. I hope whomever currently has him under contracts allow him time to recover and don’t pressure him. I hope he will just be wise enough to say “f*ck it” and focus on getting well. Get better, Peter! You’re a funny guy. You seem like a decent human being too. So hang in there and don’t stress anything but getting better!
Peter, you’ve been a huge influence on my work as a writer. I hope what little I could afford to send your way helps.
My best to you and your family.
Mike M.
Anything I can do to help. Blogging? No problem? And buying more Peter David books???? I feel like that benefits me more than him!
Please get well soon and I hope you’ll have a speedy recovery!!!
I was so sad to learn Mr. David was ill. Just bought the entire epub collection and relayed the info on facebook, for all my french friends. I’m a french translator, and I’m just finishing translating the “Astonishing X-Men” novelisation for a french publisher. “Writing Comics” is one of the best books I ever read regarding comics. And what Peter did on Incredible Hulk was… well, you know : incredible. I hope you recover soon.
